For centuries, music and poetry have sought to express the same things – the human experience of love, transience, memory, longing and wonder. Sometimes they do so through words, sometimes through sound. ‘Alma Concerts Meets Poetry’ is an attempt to bring these two languages together once more; though different, they spring from the same source – the need to give meaning to that which is fleeting and unspoken.

The series takes the listener on a journey through four distinct worlds of the European imagination. The romantic landscapes of Heinrich Heine and Robert Schumann, the symbolic Andalusia of Federico García Lorca, the metaphysical reflections of Rainer Maria Rilke, and the universal world of William Shakespeare serve as starting points for a musical and literary journey through different eras, languages and experiences.
Dialogue lies at the heart of the project. Most often, the actor’s voice and the music take turns in the conversation – the spoken word gives way to sound, and the music opens up space for the next lines. Only occasionally do the two worlds meet simultaneously, when the music becomes a subtle backdrop to the recited text.
‘Alma Concerts Meets Poetry’ is an invitation to listen attentively. It is a space where words and sound come together to create a shared experience of imagination, memory and emotion.
