At the opening concert of the Sounds of Surrender Festival, renowned master of rubato Olga Zado joins one of Poland’s finest violists, Piotr Szumieł, for an evening of emotional and stylistic diversity.
The program features gems from the Romantic era—Schubert’s famous Arpeggione Sonata, mazurkas by Chopin and Wieniawski—as well as pivotal works for viola such as Penderecki’s Sarabande and Shostakovich’s mystical Sonata for Viola and Piano, honoring the composer’s jubilee.

Olga Zado, began performing solo recitals and orchestral concerts at age 7, making her international debut at 12 in Kulturcasino Bern. She has since played in major venues including the Berlin Philharmonic, Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Leipzig Gewandhaus, and Salzburg Mozarteum. She is also artistic director of “FinestClassics” in Mannheim and a Steinway Artist.
Piotr Szumieł (b. 1977, Warsaw), a celebrated violist and professor, won top awards at competitions in Poland and Vienna. He taught at Dresden’s Carl Maria von Weber Academy (2005–2024) and has been a professor in Rostock since 2019. As a member of Apollon Musagète Quartett, he won the ARD competition in 2008 and has performed at Wigmore Hall and Carnegie Hall.
